Dog Collar Size Chart: How to Measure Your Dog (+ Size by Breed)
A soft tape, two minutes and a dog who stands still for a moment. Below you’ll find our size chart, how to measure, and the breeds we see most in each size.
Measure around the neck where the collar sits, with your dog standing and two fingers under the tape. Pick the size whose range includes that number: Small 26–36 cm (10.2–14.2 in), Medium 36–47 cm (14.2–18.5 in), Large 41–59 cm (16.1–23.2 in).

Each range is a neck measurement with the two fingers of room already in it, so measure once and compare directly. Aim for the middle of a range and the collar still adjusts both ways. Between 41 and 47 cm, Medium and Large both fit: pick the strap width you like.

How to measure your dog for a collar
- Use a soft tape, or a piece of string you then measure against a ruler.
- Place it at the base of the neck where the collar sits, not right behind the ears.
- Measure with your dog standing and calm.
- Slide two flat fingers under the tape without squashing the coat, then read the number.
- Measure twice and compare with the chart.
Some guides tell you to add 1 cm or even 2 inches, because their chart lists the bare neck or the strap length. Ours lists the neck with the room already in it, so add nothing.
Checking the fit
With the collar on, two flat fingers fit underneath and it stays put when you pull it gently forward.
- A little tight: two fingers barely fit. Let it out one notch.
- A little loose: three fingers slide in or the collar turns. Take it in until two fingers fit.
- Between Medium and Large (41–47 cm): pick the size where your number sits mid-range, or choose by width, 2 cm or 2.5 cm.
- Thick coat: measure over it without flattening it, and check again after grooming.
Dog collar size by breed
Breed gives you a starting point. These are the breeds we see most in each size; measure anyway, since two dogs of the same breed can wear two different sizes.

Flat-faced breeds and dogs who pull. For walks, many vets suggest a harness for these dogs. The collar then carries the ID tag and does the calm walks.
A matching leash: which size?

Dog bed sizes
For a bed, measure your dog lying stretched out, nose to base of tail, and add 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in). For a spare cover or insert, pick the size of the Fritz Bed you have.

For the Bowl Mat, go by the floor space under your dog’s bowls. Grande is longer, the depth stays the same.

Dog collar sizing FAQ
What size collar does a French Bulldog need?
Most often a Medium (36–47 cm, 14.2–18.5 in). Frenchies have thick necks, so measure before you order.
What size collar does a Labrador need?
Most often a Large (41–59 cm, 16.1–23.2 in). A slim Labrador or a young female can land between 41 and 47 cm, where Medium and Large both fit.
Can I use my dog’s weight to choose a collar size?
Only as a rough hint. Two dogs of the same weight can have very different necks depending on build and coat. The neck measurement is the reliable guide.
What collar width does my dog need?
Width follows size: 1.5 cm for Small, 2 cm for Medium, 2.5 cm for Large. A wider strap spreads the pressure on a strong dog.
How often should I check my dog’s collar fit?
About once a month for an adult, every week or two for a puppy, and after grooming, a shedding season or a change in weight.

The collar carries the ID tag and is made for everyday walks. For a dog who pulls hard or a flat-faced breed, many vets suggest adding a harness for walks.
