Fritz’s Summer Tips: 4 Easy Ways to Keep Your Dog Happy (and Healthy) This Season

Fritz’s Summer Tips: 4 Easy Ways to Keep Your Dog Happy (and Healthy) This Season

Summer is here, and while we’re reaching for iced drinks and shady spots, our dogs rely on us to help them stay cool, comfortable, and entertained. Whether you’re spending the season at the beach, in the park, or at home, here are four simple summer tips from me and Fritz—tried, tested, and Approved by Fritz.

1. Keep It Cool

Dogs don’t sweat like we do—they release heat through their paws and by panting. That means they can overheat faster than we might expect. One easy, inexpensive trick I’ve used with Fritz: wet them down with cool (not ice-cold) water. You can do this with a damp towel or by gently sprinkling water from a bottle.

Bonus tip: If you’re out on a walk with the Fritz Collar, check the pavement with the back of your hand first. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Stick to grass or shaded sidewalks and save longer adventures for cooler parts of the day.

2. Teach Your Dog to Swim

Fritz wasn’t a natural swimmer. At first, he was nervous around water. But with patience, a dog swimsuit, a long leash, and some positive encouragement, he got the hang of it. I let him fetch a stick at a dog-friendly beach, showed him I could go into the water too, and celebrated the small wins.

Eventually, we ditched the suit, and now? He’s a full-on waterdog—obsessed with every chance to swim. Whether you’re by the lake or on vacation, swimming is a great way to keep your dog active (and cool).

3. Try Brushing Their Teeth (It’s Easier Than You Think)

Brushing your dog’s teeth might sound like a big task, but it can be surprisingly easy—and you don’t need fancy products. Mix one spoon of baking soda with two spoons of coconut oil to create a simple, natural toothpaste. Let your dog lick a bit first to get used to the taste, and if they’re comfortable, you can slowly start brushing.

Dental care is one of those overlooked dog wellness tips, but it makes a big difference in your dog’s overall health—and it’s never too late to start.

4. Beat the Heat with Smart Schedules and Indoor Fun

When it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for your dog. Try planning longer walks in the early morning or evening, and keep mid-day outings to quick potty breaks.

Is your dog getting bored inside? Bring on the nose work. Roll up a towel and hide some treats inside, or scatter a few around the house for a mini treasure hunt. Mental stimulation can be just as satisfying as physical exercise—especially on hot days. Our go-to? Hide a few treats near the Fritz Collar  at home to make it part of the game.
